After talk swirled that Chris Hero was heading back to WWE developmental territory NXT, where he'd wrestled under the name Kassius Ohno, a tweet from Triple H made it official on Thursday, and a surprise face-off with NXT champion Shinsuke Nakamura gave the moment significant gravity.

Hero's first stint in NXT may have simply been a case of timing getting in the way of success. He has always had the tools to succeed and has long been one of the best wrestlers in the world. But in 2011, when he debuted in then-WWE developmental territory FCW, until the end of his time in NXT in late 2013, WWE was not experiencing the boom in utilizing the independent style Hero excels working.

In 2016, Hero may have had more great matches than any other wrestler on Earth. This was a product of his schedule allowing for more big matchups than a WWE star like AJ Styles and Hero's ability to put on a show against almost anyone in the world. That productivity led to him getting a second shot to prove what he can do in WWE's developmental league, even if he has put on weight -- though at the loss of very little athleticism or endurance.

News of his return to NXT surfaced weeks ago, but Hero still had to pass all medical examinations before the deal was finalized. Now, Hero has returned as Ohno and entered the NXT ring by stepping up to Nakamura, touching the title and making his intentions clear.

Hero will complete his scheduled bookings, which means FloPro subscribers will still get to see his bout with Zack Sabre Jr. at EVOLVE 77 in San Antonio, Texas, on Jan. 28.
